Pile Load Test in Bangladesh
Last updated:
A pile load test in Bangladesh is a field test that loads a finished pile, usually to a multiple of its design load, and measures how far it settles. It proves the pile's real bearing capacity before the building above relies on it. Veritas carries out static pile load tests to ASTM D1143 and pairs them with pile integrity testing (PIT).
Part of our Testing & Inspection Services.
Piles carry a building's load through soft upper soils to firmer strata below. Design capacity is calculated from borehole data, but the soil around each pile is never exactly what the calculation assumed, and construction quality varies from rig to rig. A pile load test in Bangladesh replaces assumption with measurement: a known load goes on the pile and calibrated gauges record exactly how it responds.
Veritas Technologies Ltd provides pile load testing for factories, commercial and residential buildings, bridges and industrial structures. Our engineers plan the test with your structural consultant, supervise the set-up, record every reading and issue an engineer-reviewed report. Where every pile in a group needs a quick quality check, we combine the load test with a pile integrity test (PIT) in Bangladesh.
What Is a Pile Load Test?

A pile load test (PLT) is a full-scale check of a pile's performance. In the most common form, the static axial compression test, a hydraulic jack pushes down on the pile head while reacting against a heavy dead weight (kentledge) or against a steel beam tied to anchor piles. The load is increased in planned steps and each step is held while settlement is measured. When the test is complete the pile is unloaded in stages and its rebound is recorded.
The result is a load–settlement curve. It shows how much the pile settles at its working load, how much permanent settlement remains after unloading, and whether the pile shows signs of plunging failure. Your structural engineer uses this curve to confirm, or revise, the design capacity used for the whole pile group.
Who Needs a Pile Load Test in Bangladesh?
Any project that sits on piles benefits from load testing, because a pile cannot be inspected once it is in the ground. The test is most often requested by:
- Factory owners building new production sheds, warehouses and multi-storey RMG buildings on piled foundations.
- Real estate developers and building owners who need test results for design approval or handover.
- Structural consultants who want to verify the pile capacity assumed in their design before full-scale piling.
- Contractors who must prove that their working piles meet the specification.
- Owners of existing piled buildings planning extra floors or heavier machinery, where the remaining capacity must be confirmed.
- Bridge, jetty and infrastructure projects where piles carry heavy or lateral loads.
Types of Pile Load Test We Carry Out
The right test depends on the load the pile must resist and the stage of the project. The table below summarises the options.
| Test | What it measures | Typical use | Reference standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static axial compression test | Settlement under increasing vertical load | Most building and factory piles | ASTM D1143 |
| Static axial tension (uplift) test | Upward movement under pull-out load | Piles resisting uplift, such as towers or basements | ASTM D3689 |
| Lateral load test | Sideways deflection under horizontal load | Bridges, retaining structures, jetties | ASTM D3966 |
| Pile integrity test (PIT) | Shaft continuity and approximate length | Screening many or all piles quickly | ASTM D5882 |
Initial (trial) pile test vs working pile test
An initial or trial pile is installed before main piling and is often loaded to a higher multiple of the design load, sometimes until failure, so the designer can confirm the capacity assumption. A working or routine pile test is carried out on a pile that will remain part of the foundation, so it is loaded to a lower proof load that will not damage it. Your project specification states which tests are required and the proof load for each.
Kentledge vs reaction pile set-up
With kentledge, concrete blocks or steel weights heavier than the maximum test load are stacked on a platform above the pile. With a reaction pile set-up, a steel beam is anchored to neighbouring piles or ground anchors and the jack pushes against it. Kentledge is simple and common on open sites; a reaction system suits congested sites or very large loads. We advise on the safest option for your site.
How Is a Pile Load Test Done? Our Step-by-Step Process
- Review of the pile layout, design loads, borehole logs and project specification with the structural engineer.
- Selection of test piles and agreement of the test load, load steps, hold periods and acceptance criteria.
- Preparation of the pile head: trimming, levelling and casting a cap so the load is applied evenly.
- Installation of the kentledge platform or reaction beam, hydraulic jack and calibrated pressure gauge or load cell.
- Fixing of dial gauges or displacement transducers to reference beams supported clear of the test zone.
- Loading in increments, holding each step until settlement slows to the specified rate, with readings logged at fixed intervals.
- Staged unloading with rebound readings to measure elastic and permanent settlement.
- Plotting of the load–settlement curve, interpretation against the acceptance criteria and issue of the signed report.
Safety is managed throughout: kentledge stacks are checked for stability, the test area is barricaded and only trained staff operate the jack.
What Do You Receive After the Test?
- A pile load test report with project details, pile identification, pile dimensions and concrete age.
- Calibration references for the jack, gauge or load cell and displacement instruments.
- Tabulated readings for every load step, hold period and unloading stage.
- Load–settlement and time–settlement graphs.
- Interpretation of results against the specification, including total and residual settlement.
- Site photographs and notes on any irregularities observed during the test.
- Recommendations for the structural engineer where results fall outside the expected range.
Which Standards Apply to Pile Load Testing in Bangladesh?
The Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC 2020) sets out the requirement to confirm pile capacity by load testing on piled foundations. Test procedures follow internationally recognised methods, chiefly ASTM D1143 for static axial compression, ASTM D3689 for uplift and ASTM D3966 for lateral load. Integrity screening follows ASTM D5882. The project specification, prepared by the structural engineer of record, decides the number of tests, the proof load and the settlement limits, and we test to that document.
Pile Load Test vs Pile Integrity Test (PIT): Which Do You Need?
The two tests answer different questions, so many projects use both.
| Pile load test (PLT) | Pile integrity test (PIT) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main question | Can the pile carry its design load? | Is the pile shaft sound and continuous? |
| Method | Static load applied with a jack | Low-strain hammer tap and sensor |
| Piles tested | A selected few | Many or all piles |
| Time per pile | Hours to a day or more, plus set-up | A few minutes |
| Equipment | Kentledge or reaction frame, jack, gauges | Hand-held hammer, accelerometer, data unit |
A common approach is to screen all piles with PIT, then load test selected piles, including any with doubtful PIT signals. Read more on our pile integrity test (PIT) page.
What Does a Pile Load Test Cost in Bangladesh?
We do not publish a fixed rate because each test is different. The main cost factors are:
- Test load: a higher load needs more kentledge or a stronger reaction system, which is the largest cost item.
- Pile diameter, length and type (bored cast-in-situ, driven precast or steel).
- Number of piles to be tested and whether integrity tests are added.
- Site access for cranes and trucks carrying kentledge, and available working space.
- Project location and the time needed for set-up, loading and dismantling.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a pile load test?
A pile load test applies a measured load to a constructed pile and records how much it settles. In a static test the load is added in steps with a hydraulic jack against kentledge or reaction piles, and dial gauges track movement. The load–settlement record shows whether the pile can safely carry its design load.
Is a pile load test required for buildings in Bangladesh?
For piled foundations, BNBC 2020 expects pile capacity to be confirmed by load testing, and most consultants, approving authorities and buyer-driven compliance programmes ask for test results. The number and type of tests are set by the structural engineer of record in the project specification.
What is the difference between a pile load test and a pile integrity test (PIT)?
A pile load test measures capacity: how much load a pile carries and how far it settles. A pile integrity test (PIT) is a quick low-strain test, done with a small hammer and sensor, that checks the shaft for cracks, necking or length problems. PIT can screen every pile; a load test is done on selected piles.
How long does a static pile load test take?
Setting up kentledge or a reaction frame usually takes the longest. The loading itself normally runs from several hours to more than a day, because each load step is held until settlement slows to the rate set in the specification. Large test loads or tension and lateral tests take longer.
What does a pile load test cost in Bangladesh?
There is no single price. Cost depends mainly on the test load (which sets the kentledge tonnage or reaction system), pile diameter and depth, number of piles tested, site access and location, and whether integrity testing is added. Share your pile schedule and design loads and we will send a written quotation.
When can a newly cast pile be load tested?
Concrete needs time to gain strength, so testing is normally done after the curing period stated in the specification, often around 28 days or once cube or cylinder results confirm the required strength. Testing too early can damage the pile head and give misleading settlement readings.
What happens if a pile fails the load test?
The report gives the structural engineer the full load–settlement data, so the cause can be judged: soil capacity, pile defect or test set-up. Typical next steps include integrity testing of nearby piles, extra test piles, a revised pile length or capacity, or additional piles in the group.
